KILLEARN ESTATES
If you're looking for a neighborhood in northeast Tallahassee that feels established, green, and genuinely lived-in, Killearn Estates is worth putting at the top of your list. It was Tallahassee's very first master-planned community, and more than 50 years later it still has that same laid-back, tree-canopy charm. This is largely because all of the utility lines in the neighborhood run underground. No poles, no overhead wires cutting through your view, and way less concern about the power going out during a storm. Just quiet, tree-lined streets that make for a great walk, run, or bike ride any time of year.
The community started in 1964 when developer J.T. Williams teamed up with Mallory Horne and Bill Cartee to buy 3,800 acres of what was then the Velda Dairy Farm. That land eventually became Killearn Estates, along with its sister communities Killearn Acres and Killearn Lakes. Together, these three neighborhoods are some of the largest subdivisions in Leon County. Making them the perfect place to call home in Tallahassee!

WHY RESIDENTS LOVE KILLEARN ESTATES
One of the many reasons residents love the Killearn Estates neighborhood so much is its proximity to everything you might need in town. Outdoor recreation, restaurants, shopping, and even neighborhood pools are all close by. According to the Killearn Homes Association, residents also have access to a good number of parks and green spaces tucked throughout the community's 4,000+ acres.
Here's a fun bit of history: a lot of that open land exists because Killearn Estates was originally planned around a riding academy. The 1960s master plan set aside space for horseback trail riding, and you can still see the bones of that today in the neighborhood's extensive trail network. By the 1980s, though, the riding academy idea had run its course, so those same trails got a second life as walking, running, and biking paths, which is exactly how residents use them now. We aren't called Trailahassee for nothing!
Scattered along those trails are a handful of lakes and parks that only residents get to enjoy:
- Shannon Lakes North Park lets you launch a small, hand-carried boat right onto Lake Killarney.
- Shannon Lakes Park is where you'll usually find someone fishing off the pier.
- Kimberton Park has picnic tables with water views, making it a great spot to visit on a sunny afternoon.
If you're a golfer, you'll love being close to the Killearn Club, a private golf course and club that was recently reimagined. Come see the difference in the course and the amenities. It might just have you packing up and moving into the neighborhood the same day!
When you live in Killearn Estates, you have so much to explore you might not even need to leave the neighborhood for outdoor recreation! But when you do, you can visit a local park maintained by the City of Tallahassee.
SCHOOLS NEAR KILLEARN ESTATES
Families tend to gravitate toward Killearn Estates partly because of the schools, and it's a big neighborhood, so there's actually a mix depending on exactly where you land. Per the Killearn Homes Association, the community is zoned across several highly-regarded Leon County Schools campuses, including DeSoto Trail, Gilchrist, W.T. Moore, and Roberts Elementary schools, along with Montford Middle School and both Lawton Chiles High School and Lincoln High School.
Some families also opt for Community Christian School, a private option in the area. Because Killearn Estates covers so much ground, school zones can vary block to block, so it's always worth double-checking your exact address against the Leon County Schools zone lookup before you buy.
NEARBY SHOPPING & AMENITIES
You really don't have to go far for errands when you live in Killearn Estates. The neighborhood sits right in the middle of some of Northeast Tallahassee's best retail and dining. Village Square, just minutes away, covers most of the basics with a Publix, HomeGoods, The Fresh Market, and a handful of other shops and restaurants.
But that's really just the start. The neighborhood also borders Killearn Square Shopping Center and Carriage Gate, both of which add even more day-to-day convenience right at your doorstep. Head a bit further out toward Thomasville Road and Kerry Forest Parkway, and you'll hit Bannerman Crossing, a bigger shopping district with another Publix, plus a solid mix of restaurants, coffee shops, and retail. That district is becoming one of the go-to spots for Killearn residents on both the Estates and Lakes side of the neighborhood. Not far from there is Market Square, another well-established shopping center along Thomasville Road with even more dining and retail options.
If you want to venture a little further, the whole Thomasville Road corridor gives you quick access to big-box stores, boutique shopping, and a long list of local restaurants, and it's an easy drive down to Midtown or downtown Tallahassee. The city is famous for its short commute, and you can get almost anywhere in about 15–20 minutes.
